How much is my old laptop worth? What sets the price
Updated 5 Oct 2026 8 min read
The short answer
An old laptop is worth what a buyer will pay after checking it, so no chart gives an exact figure. Value depends mostly on the processor generation and whether it still gets software updates, then RAM and storage, battery health, screen and body condition, and whether you have the charger and bill. Get two or three quotes for the exact model.
What decides a laptop's value
Buyers price a used laptop on what the next owner can do with it and how much it will cost to make it sellable again. Brand matters less than most people expect. These are the factors that move the number, roughly in order of weight:
| Factor | Why it matters | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Processor generation | Decides speed and whether current Windows or macOS is supported | Windows: Settings > System > About. Mac: Apple menu > About This Mac |
| Software support | A laptop stuck on an unsupported system is harder to resell | See the next section |
| RAM and storage | 8 GB RAM and an SSD are what most buyers now expect; HDD-only laptops feel slow | Settings > System > About and Storage, or About This Mac |
| Battery health | A worn battery is a cost the buyer has to absorb | Battery report on Windows, cycle count on Mac |
| Screen | Dead pixels, lines, cracks or a loose hinge are expensive to fix | Look at a plain white and a plain black screen |
| Body and keyboard | Dents, missing keys and broken ports lower the offer | Test every key, port and the trackpad |
| Charger, box and bill | Proves ownership and age; a missing original charger usually lowers offers | Find the purchase invoice and charger |
Gaming and creator laptops are judged on the graphics card as well, and business laptops (ThinkPad, Latitude, EliteBook) often hold demand better than their consumer equivalents because they are easy to repair. A laptop with soldered RAM cannot be upgraded later, so buyers value it on what it has today.
Software support: where value drops fastest
The single biggest step down in value usually comes when a laptop can no longer run the current operating system. Two cut-offs matter in 2026.
| Laptop | Position on 5 Oct 2026 | Effect on resale |
|---|---|---|
| Windows laptop that cannot run Windows 11 | Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. Microsoft says it still works, but gets no security updates or fixes unless enrolled in Extended Security Updates, which runs to 12 October 2027 | Fewer buyers; usually the lowest offers for a working machine |
| Windows laptop with Intel 8th Gen Core or newer, or AMD Ryzen 2000 series or newer | Generally inside Windows 11's processor list, subject to TPM 2.0 and the other requirements | Normal resale market |
| Intel-based MacBook | Apple said at WWDC 2025 that macOS Tahoe 26 is the last major release for Intel Macs | Apple silicon (M1 and later) models hold value better |
| Apple silicon MacBook (M1 and later) | Supported by current macOS | Strongest demand among used laptops |
To check a Windows laptop, run the PC Health Check app or look up your exact processor on Microsoft's supported processor list. The list is specific; a model name like "Core i5" is not enough on its own.
Battery, screen and condition
Battery health is the item most sellers forget to check, and the one a careful buyer always checks.
- Windows: open Command Prompt and run powercfg /batteryreport. It saves an HTML report in your user folder. Compare Full charge capacity with Design capacity. If the first is much lower, the battery has aged.
- Mac: hold the Option key, click the Apple menu, choose System Information, then Power. The cycle count is under Battery Information. Apple says most modern MacBooks are designed to keep up to 80% of their original capacity at a maximum of 1,000 cycles.
- Screen: open a plain white image and a plain black image full screen and look for bright or dark dots, lines, patches and pressure marks.
- Keyboard and ports: type every key in a text editor and test each USB, HDMI and audio port. Note anything that does not work; a buyer will find it anyway.
Be honest about faults when you ask for a quote. Every buyer re-checks at handover, and a fault that is found then lowers the price anyway, after you have spent time on the deal.
How fast laptops lose value
We could not find a reliable, published depreciation rate for used laptops in India, so we will not quote one. Treat any single percentage you see online with care. What is consistent is the pattern:
- Value falls fastest when a newer generation launches and when a laptop loses operating system support.
- Mainstream models are easier to price and sell than rare ones, because buyers can compare them.
- A laptop that sits unused does not keep its value; its battery still ages and its software still goes out of date.
- Condition matters more as a laptop gets older, because the newest-model premium has already gone.
The practical lesson: if you already know you will replace a laptop, selling or exchanging it sooner usually gets you more than waiting.
How to get a real quote
Online calculators give a range. The real figure is what someone confirms after checking the machine. Get quotes from two or three different routes for the exact model, processor, RAM and storage.
| Route | How the price is set | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange on a big online store | Amazon says exchange values come from third-party partners and can vary by pin code, and the laptop is checked at delivery | Amazon charges a ₹129 exchange fee for laptops and does not accept a laptop whose battery is dead and runs only on the charger |
| Classified listing | You set the price and negotiate | Time, haggling and payment fraud; see our seller comparison guide |
| SwapMyTech in Bengaluru | An online estimate first, then a free check at your door that confirms the value | The verified value comes off a new product, or you can keep it as Swap Credits |
At SwapMyTech you can get an estimate online, and if you accept the verified value at your door you pay only the difference on anything new. Taking it as Swap Credits instead gives you 5% more, valid for 18 months on any product. If the value is not right for you, the agent leaves and nothing is charged. SwapMyTech takes working devices only; for a dead laptop, see what to do with a broken phone or laptop.
Prepare it before the check
- Back up your files and sign out of your Microsoft or Apple account.
- Turn off Find My on a Mac, and remove any BIOS or firmware password.
- Erase it properly, following how to wipe a laptop before selling.
- Charge it, clean the screen and keyboard, and keep the original charger with it.
- Find the purchase bill. It proves the laptop is yours and how old it is.
Do the erase after you have run the battery report and noted the specs, so you can answer a buyer's questions without switching it back on.
Questions people ask
- How can I find out what my laptop is worth for free?
- Note the exact model, processor, RAM, storage and battery health, then get two or three quotes: an exchange price on a store, a trade-in estimate, and a look at listings for the same model. The real figure is the one confirmed after a check.
- Is a laptop that cannot run Windows 11 worth anything?
- Usually still something if it works, but fewer buyers want it. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025; the laptop keeps working but gets no security updates unless enrolled in Extended Security Updates.
- Does the original bill increase my laptop's value?
- It helps. The bill shows the laptop is yours and how old it is, and is needed for any remaining warranty claim. Many buyers ask for it, and some will not take a laptop without it.
- Is a laptop with a bad battery worth selling?
- Often yes, but expect a lower offer. Some exchange programmes refuse it: Amazon's exchange FAQ says it does not accept a laptop whose battery is dead and only turns on when connected to a charger.
- Should I upgrade the RAM or SSD before selling?
- Usually not. You rarely get back what the parts cost. Selling the laptop as it is, clean and fully working, is the simpler choice.
