How to wipe a laptop before selling (Windows and Mac)

Updated 5 Oct 2026 8 min read

The short answer

Back up your files, sign out of your Microsoft or Apple account, and turn off Find My on a Mac. On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC, choose Remove everything and turn on Clean data. On an Apple silicon or T2 Mac, use Erase All Content and Settings. Then remove the laptop from your online account.

Before you erase anything

A reset cannot be undone, so the first job is making sure nothing you need is left only on this laptop. The second is making sure the laptop is not still tied to your accounts, because a buyer cannot use a machine that is locked to you.

  1. Back up your files. Copy Documents, Desktop, Downloads and photos to an external drive or cloud storage. Check browser bookmarks and saved passwords are synced to your account or exported.
  2. Collect licence details. Note any software you paid for (Office, Adobe, antivirus) and deactivate it on this machine if the vendor limits how many devices you can use.
  3. Find your BitLocker recovery key (Windows). If the drive is encrypted, the key is usually saved to your Microsoft account at aka.ms/myrecoverykey. You will not normally need it for a reset, but if something goes wrong mid-way, a locked drive without the key is a dead end.
  4. Sign out of everything that is tied to the device. Messaging apps, cloud sync clients, password managers and any work account.
  5. Charge it and plug it in. A reset can take an hour or more, and a laptop that loses power halfway may not boot.

Office or college laptop? If the laptop was ever set up with a work or school account, ask that IT team before you sell it. They may need to release it from their device management, and they may hold its BitLocker key rather than you.

Wiping a Windows 11 laptop

Windows has a built-in reset that reinstalls Windows and removes your files, apps and settings. Microsoft says the Clean data option is the one to use if you plan to donate, recycle or sell the PC.

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Next to Reset this PC, select Reset PC.
  3. Choose Remove everything.
  4. Choose Cloud download (fetches a fresh copy of Windows) or Local reinstall (uses files already on the laptop, faster but may be less up to date).
  5. Under additional settings, select Change settings and turn Clean data on. This takes much longer because it cleans the drive, not just deletes the files.
  6. Confirm and let it run. Do not close the lid or unplug it.
  7. When the laptop reaches the first setup screen (choosing a country or region), switch it off. Leave setup for the new owner.
  8. From another device, go to account.microsoft.com/devices, find the laptop and choose Remove. Microsoft also suggests unlinking it so it no longer counts against your Microsoft Store devices.

Microsoft's own caveat: the reset's data erasure is "targeted at consumers and does not meet government and industry data erasure standards." For a personal laptop that is usually enough. For a business laptop with client or financial data, use certified erasure software or an IT asset disposal service that issues an erasure certificate.

You can check whether your drive was encrypted under Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption (or BitLocker on Pro editions). If encryption was on from the start, the reset is stronger, because whatever is left on the drive was only ever stored in encrypted form.

Wiping a Mac

On a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 and later) or an Intel Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip, running macOS Monterey 12 or later, Apple provides Erase All Content and Settings. It removes your data, settings and apps but keeps macOS installed. Apple's deployment guide explains that erasing destroys the encryption keys for the data, which makes the old data unreadable rather than just hidden.

  1. Back up with Time Machine or copy your files to an external drive.
  2. Sign out of iMessage: open Messages > Settings > iMessage and choose Sign Out.
  3. Turn off Find My, which also turns off Activation Lock: System Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All > Find My Mac, then switch it off.
  4. Open System Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. Enter your administrator password and follow the steps. It signs you out of Apple services as part of the erase. It may ask you to switch on a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse.
  6. When it restarts to the setup screen, shut it down.

On an older Intel Mac without a T2 chip, Apple's route is to start up from macOS Recovery, erase the drive in Disk Utility and reinstall macOS. Apple also recommends resetting NVRAM on Intel Macs. If you already handed the Mac over without turning off Find My, you can remove it at iCloud.com/find by selecting the Mac and choosing Remove.

SSDs, hard drives and firmware passwords

Most laptops sold in the last several years use an SSD; older and budget models may still have a spinning hard drive (HDD). The difference matters for how data is erased.

How erasing differs by drive type
DriveWhat worksWatch out for
Hard drive (HDD)Overwriting the whole drive, which is what Windows' Clean data doesA plain reset without Clean data only deletes the file index; the data can often be recovered
SSD with encryption onErasing the encryption key (Mac Erase All Content and Settings) or resetting an encrypted Windows drive with Clean dataEncryption must have been on before your data was written
SSD without encryptionClean data reset, or the SSD maker's secure-erase toolSSDs spread writes across spare cells, so overwriting is not guaranteed to reach every cell. NIST's media sanitisation guide treats overwriting and purging as different levels

Firmware passwords. Some Intel Macs and many Windows laptops (as a BIOS or UEFI password) can have a password that blocks booting from other drives or changing settings. Remove it before you sell, or the buyer may be stuck. On an Intel Mac, start up from macOS Recovery, open Utilities > Startup Security Utility and choose Turn Off Firmware Password. Apple silicon Macs do not use a firmware password. For a Windows laptop, the BIOS password is removed in the laptop's setup screen; the key to enter it differs by brand, so check your maker's support page.

If you forget an Intel Mac's firmware password, Apple's only route is an in-person service appointment with proof of purchase. Clear it while you still remember it.

What to hand over with the laptop

A clean, complete handover makes a laptop easier to sell and quicker to verify. Most buyers in India will ask for at least the bill.

Handover checklist
ItemWhy it matters
Original chargerBuyers check that it charges; a missing or third-party charger usually lowers the offer
Purchase bill or GST invoiceShows the laptop is yours and how old it is; needed for any remaining warranty claim
Box and manuals (if you kept them)Helps prove it is genuine and makes resale easier
Warranty or extended-care papersSome plans can be transferred; check with the provider
Any passwords removedBIOS or firmware password cleared, Find My or Microsoft account unlinked

Before you hand it over, also remove any USB drives, SD cards or discs still in the slots, and peel off stickers with your name or office asset tag. If you are in Bengaluru and want to trade it in or sell it, SwapMyTech can estimate it online and checks the device at your door.

Questions people ask

Is deleting my files and emptying the Recycle Bin enough?
No. Deleting files only removes the pointer to them, and recovery tools can often bring them back, especially from a hard drive. Use Windows' Reset PC with Clean data, or Erase All Content and Settings on a Mac.
How long does a Windows reset with Clean data take?
It depends on the size and speed of the drive. Expect it to take noticeably longer than a normal reset, often an hour or more on a large drive. Keep the laptop plugged in throughout.
Do I need my BitLocker recovery key to reset the laptop?
Usually not if you can sign in to Windows, but keep it handy. If the reset is interrupted or the laptop asks for it at startup, you will not get past that screen without it. It is normally stored at aka.ms/myrecoverykey.
Should I remove the SSD and keep it instead?
You can on laptops where the SSD is a separate module, but many thin laptops and all recent MacBooks have storage soldered to the board. A laptop sold without storage is also worth less. A proper erase is the more practical choice for most people.
Will the buyer get a working copy of Windows or macOS?
Yes. Reset this PC reinstalls Windows, and Erase All Content and Settings keeps macOS installed. The new owner sets it up with their own account.
