Selling and exchange

Sell your old phone or exchange it? Every route compared

Updated 5 Oct 2026 8 min read

The short answer

If you are buying a new phone anyway, an exchange is the least effort: the old phone is checked at delivery and its value comes off the price. Listing it yourself on OLX can get a higher price but takes time and carries fraud risk. Resale platforms sit in between. Whatever you choose, compare two or three quotes for the exact model first.

The four routes in one table

There is no single best route. Each trades price against speed, effort and risk. This summary is based on what each route's own pages say and on the public safety advisories cited below; we have not invented any prices, because quotes change by model, condition and pin code.

Store exchange: Amazon, Flipkart and Croma

Exchange on a big online store is built for convenience. You choose the "with exchange" option on the new product, the value of your old phone is taken off the price, and the delivery associate checks the old phone when the new one arrives. Amazon and Croma say exchange is only available in select cities, so enter your pin code first.

Amazon.in publishes the most detail. Its exchange FAQ says:

  • Exchange values come from third-party exchange partners and can differ by brand, model and delivery pin code.
  • You can exchange only one used product per new product.
  • An exchange fee is added to the order: ₹129 for a mobile and ₹129 for a laptop.
  • The phone must work, with no cracks, dents, dead pixels or lines on the screen, and must match the details you entered (the IMEI is checked).
  • You need the Amazon app on the old phone, logged in to the ordering account, and at least 50% battery for the tests.
  • If the phone fails the checks, you can still take the new product by paying the exchange discount amount; the old phone is not picked up.

Flipkart's exchange page says the value depends on the condition and demand of the old device, and that completely broken or non-functioning devices cannot be exchanged. Croma's exchange FAQ asks for a working phone with an intact display and no damage, validated by the delivery associate against the IMEI, with personal data deleted and iCloud or Google accounts signed out.

The catch with store exchange: the value only exists as a discount on that order. You cannot keep it for later, and if the old phone is rejected at the door, Amazon's rule is that you pay the exchange discount there and then to take the new product.

Resale and buyback platforms

Several Indian platforms will quote for your phone online, collect it from your home and pay you directly, without you buying anything. The pattern is similar across them: you answer questions about the model and condition, get a quote, book a pickup, and an executive inspects the phone before the deal is final.

  • Good for: selling without buying a new phone at the same time, and avoiding strangers.
  • Read before booking: what happens if the inspection finds something the questions missed, how and when you are paid, and whether there is any pickup fee.
  • Answer the condition questions honestly. An optimistic answer gives a higher quote online and a lower one at your door.

Classifieds: OLX and similar

Listing a phone yourself usually gets the highest price, because no middleman takes a margin. You pay for it in time, haggling, and risk. Police advisories describe a common fraud aimed at sellers: a "buyer" agrees your price, claims they cannot meet, sends a fake payment screenshot, then sends a QR code to "receive" the money. Scanning it and entering your UPI PIN sends money out of your account.

Safe-selling rules; the first four come from Delhi Police Cyber Cell and NPCI advisories
RuleWhy
Never enter your UPI PIN to receive moneyNPCI: the UPI PIN is only for sending money, never for receiving
Do not scan a QR code sent by a buyerScanning and approving is how money leaves your account
Avoid advance payments either wayDelhi Police lists it as a common trap
Be wary of buyers in a hurry or claiming to be posted far awayUrgency and borrowed authority are standard fraud signs
Hand over the phone only after money shows in your bank appA screenshot is not a payment
Meet in a busy public place in daylightAvoids being alone with a stranger holding a valuable item

Wipe the phone first, and do not share its IMEI in the listing. Our guide on preparing your phone before selling covers the steps.

Trade-in at SwapMyTech

SwapMyTech works like a store exchange with a few differences that matter if you want flexibility:

  • You see an online estimate before anyone visits, and an agent checks the phone free at your door in Bengaluru city and explains any change. If you do not accept the value, the agent leaves and nothing is charged.
  • The value is not tied to a phone. It can go towards any new product, and you can put up to four old devices against one new one.
  • You can keep the value as Swap Credits instead: store credit worth 5% more, valid for 18 months on any product.
  • New products are delivered across India; in Bengaluru, usually within 24-48 hours.

SwapMyTech takes working devices only. If your phone is dead or badly damaged, see what to do with a broken phone or laptop instead.

Questions people ask

Is it better to sell or exchange an old phone?
Selling privately usually gets more money but takes more time and carries fraud risk. Exchange is quicker and safer, but the value only counts against a new purchase. Compare a quote from each before deciding.
What happens if my old phone fails the exchange check at delivery?
On Amazon, you can still take the new product by paying the exchange discount amount, and the old phone stays with you. Flipkart and Croma also list conditions a phone must meet, starting with being in working order.
Can I exchange a phone with a cracked screen?
Usually not on Amazon or Croma, whose conditions ask for an intact, undamaged display. SwapMyTech says cracks lower the value but rarely disqualify a working device. A dead phone is not accepted by any of these exchange routes.
How do I avoid fraud when selling on OLX?
Never scan a QR code or enter your UPI PIN to receive money, avoid advance payments, meet in a public place, and hand over the phone only after the money shows in your bank app, not a screenshot.
Can I exchange more than one phone for one new phone?
Amazon allows one used product per new product. SwapMyTech accepts up to four devices against one new product, each checked in the same doorstep visit.
