iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16: should you upgrade?

Updated 5 Oct 2026 7 min read

The short answer

The iPhone 17 adds a larger 6.3-inch 120Hz ProMotion display with Always-On, up to 30 hours of video playback against 22, a 48MP ultra wide and 18MP Center Stage front camera, the A19 chip and 256 GB base storage. On 5 Oct 2026 Apple India charged ₹99,900 for the iPhone 17 (256 GB) and ₹89,900 for the iPhone 16 (128 GB).

Display, battery, camera and chip in plain terms

  • Display. This is the change you notice first. ProMotion adjusts the refresh rate up to 120Hz, so scrolling and animations look smoother, and the Always-On display shows the time, widgets and Live Activities on a dimmed lock screen. Neither appears on the iPhone 16's spec sheet. The 3,000-nit outdoor peak helps in Indian summer sun. Ceramic Shield 2 has 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation, per Apple.
  • Battery. Apple quotes eight more hours of video playback than the iPhone 16. Real use varies, but it matters if your current phone does not last a full day.
  • Cameras. The main camera is 48MP on both. The ultra wide goes from 12MP to 48MP, which means more detail in wide shots and close-ups. The front camera moves to a square 18MP sensor with a wider field of view, and Center Stage keeps you framed on video calls.
  • Chip. The A19 and A18 both have six CPU cores and five GPU cores. Apple compares the A19 with the A15 in the iPhone 13 (1.5x faster CPU, more than 2x faster GPU), not with the A18, so do not expect a dramatic everyday speed gap over an iPhone 16.
  • Storage. The iPhone 17 starts at 256 GB, double the iPhone 16's 128 GB. If you shoot 4K video, 128 GB fills quickly.

Some things stay the same. Both phones use a 48MP main camera, a six-core CPU and a five-core GPU, both have Wi-Fi 7, the Camera Control button and USB-C. The iPhone 17 is 7 g heavier and slightly larger, so an iPhone 16 case will not fit it. If you mostly message, browse, pay with UPI and take photos in good light, an iPhone 16 still does all of that well.

iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 prices in India

Apple India prices on 5 Oct 2026 (MRP, inclusive of taxes)
ModelStorageApple India price
iPhone 17256 GB₹99,900
iPhone 17512 GB₹1,24,900
iPhone 16128 GB₹89,900

Buying new, the gap is ₹10,000, and that ₹10,000 buys twice the storage as well as the display, battery and camera upgrades. On Apple's own prices the iPhone 17 is the better buy for most people. The iPhone 16 makes sense only if 128 GB is enough for you and a retailer offers it well below Apple's price.

If neither fits, Apple India's store listed two nearby options on the same day: the iPhone 17e from ₹79,900 and the iPhone Air from ₹1,49,900. Compare their spec pages before choosing; the price gaps are large in both directions.

Prices are from apple.com/in on 5 October 2026. Apple changes prices and bank offers often, so check the store on the day you buy.

Who should upgrade

  • From an iPhone 16: usually not. The chip and main camera are close. Upgrade if you want the 120Hz screen, you run out of battery or storage, or you take a lot of selfies and group shots.
  • From an iPhone 15 or 14: a strong case. You gain ProMotion, Always-On, a much longer battery claim, double the base storage and the 48MP ultra wide.
  • From an iPhone 13 or older: yes. Apple's own comparison puts the A19 CPU at 1.5x and the GPU at more than 2x the A15, and an older battery will likely have worn as well.
  • From Android: compare against the phones you already know. The iPhone 17 now matches the 120Hz screens common on Android flagships.

Working out your net cost after a trade-in

The sticker price is not what an upgrade really costs. The useful number is the new phone's price minus what your old phone is worth. Work it out like this:

  1. Start with the new phone's price, for example the iPhone 17 at ₹99,900 on apple.com/in today.
  2. Get a written value for your old phone. It depends on the model, storage, battery health, screen and body condition, and whether everything works. Get an online estimate first, then have it confirmed at an inspection.
  3. Subtract. Net cost = new phone price - confirmed trade-in value.
  4. Compare the options. At SwapMyTech you can exchange a working phone at a free doorstep check in Bengaluru and pay only the difference, or keep the value as Swap Credits, which add 5% and stay valid for 18 months. Credits suit you if you are not buying today.

Before handing over any phone, back it up, sign out of your Apple Account and turn off Find My. Our guide on preparing your phone before selling covers each step. Trade-ins need a working phone; a dead or broken one will not qualify.

Questions people ask

For a new purchase, yes on Apple India's prices: ₹10,000 more gets you 256 GB instead of 128 GB, a 120Hz Always-On display, longer battery life and better ultra wide and front cameras. For an iPhone 16 owner, the upgrade is optional.
